You made a mistake with the AMD build, which hurt your FPS. Your HDD doesn’t seem to be causing the FPS drops, so you’re missing something else. Check your components for the right setup.

The processor might be limiting your performance. I couldn’t locate details about your RAM amount. With less than 8GB, this could be an issue, though it won’t significantly affect frame rates. Missing an SSD in your setup wouldn’t help much for FPS but would make the system feel more responsive.

AMD is a great firm, though the FX lineup isn't particularly strong.

My Windows storage uses a 120GB SSD while the 4TB drive is reserved for gaming, and I have 32GB of RAM.

With an i7-8700, DDR4 RAM, and your GPU still in place, you should definitely be able to reach a smooth 60fps performance.

You're right to suspect the CPU. The Ryzen processors excel in handling multiple threads efficiently, offering better single-thread performance than alternatives like Bulldozer or Excavator.

I think based on userbenchmark, the Core i7-8700 offers the strongest single-core balanced performance without needing overclocking. Should I use it for achieving 60fps? Mechanical hard drives might affect frame rates, and RAM speed could also influence performance. You’re ready to upgrade to a top machine—what do you need?

For a silky experience, consider the Ryzen 1600. While its frame rates aren’t as high as a 7700k, the smooth timing makes games run better. The bottleneck often comes from the GPU being limited by the CPU’s performance, especially with IPC not ideal for gaming. Personally, I prefer my 4790k and Fury with free sync—most titles feel fluid thanks to that feature. If you can afford it, upgrade to a Ryzen and a G-Sync monitor. Alternatively, trade in your 980ti for a Fury with a 1080p 144Hz free sync panel, and you’ll enjoy great results.
