If this holds, I'm planning to build some virtual machines to secure licenses. I really appreciate what Microsoft is doing with Windows 10 so far. I'm hoping it gains strong mainstream adoption, since I want more people without technical expertise to upgrade to something more current.

You receive it without cost as long as you remain in the upgrade program. This means you'll see the watermark, and it's likely they'll remove your access if you don't upgrade again in a while.
