The scent of hot metal from your RX 580 running at 240W might have reminded you it was around 100°C. Also, I haven’t looked at the ZEN 3 maximum temperature settings in a while, so it could have changed.

Absolutely, I wouldn't risk my CPU under such conditions except for pushing it with poor cooling performance.

It's the heat that causes it to shut itself off, not the throttle. I realized those chips throttle before failure. Initially I thought first throttle, but if the temperature stays high it will eventually stop.

overclocking my 2600 runs smoothly without any issues, allowing it to reach temperatures above 100°C effortlessly. Manual clock adjustments don’t trigger throttling afterward.

There is a setting there that allows for override of throttling. I don't remember what it's called but I used it on my old FX machine because my weak VRM throttled the CPU due to the 8 cores. So what I did I took the stock cpu fan and strapped it to the VRM heatsink and hit that option. Regardless as heat rises instability comes whether you notice it or not. But hey up to you man, aftermarket coolers aren't that expensive but your choice.

In my view, frequency leads to instability first, but it doesn’t really matter since I’m generally too lazy to overclock my CPU these days.

It seems the frequency might be too high for the available voltage, and heat could also lead to problems. Running OCCT or Prime95 at a CPU temperature of 100°C likely would cause the stress test to fail quickly.
