What is the superior choice among these two laptops?
I discovered that the integrated graphics with the Ryzen 5 4500U processor are referred to as an APU (Accelerated Processing Unit), which uses the system's RAM as VRAM. This led me to mix up two different laptops. One features an i5-1135G7 processor with built-in Iris Xe graphics and the Nvidia MX350, paired with 2 GB of system RAM, 8 GB DDR4 memory, and a 256 GB SSD. The other has the Ryzen 5 4500U with AMD Radeon Graphics, 8 GB of system RAM, 512 GB SSD, and a full aluminum body for improved build quality. If I upgrade the second laptop's RAM to 16 GB (combining both types), will it outperform the first one? Since the AMD Radeon Graphics uses the extra VRAM, could that still make it better despite being an APU?
P.S.- The prices of both laptops are almost identical after the RAM upgrade in the second model.
It's definitely improved, especially if you upgrade the RAM (3200mhz is likely the max) and enable dual channel, the APU should function better. However, it won't reach the MX350 level. I think the MX350 uses the same chip as the GTX 1050 (GP107), so just need to add another 8GB. That's the solution.
is the mx350 2gb using gdd5? if yes, then amd apus become outdated compared to i5 plus mx350. radeon graphics can boost performance beyond standard single channel, though not as much as the mx350 because it uses dedicated vrams. keep in mind, a 3200mhz dual channel dual pumped setup isn't as fast as gdd5 quad pumped (3200mhz DDR vs gdd5 which is quad pumped, better for gpus).
These are the laptops I discussed.

Consider this option. Which would you pick if both were upgraded with an extra 8GB of system RAM?
What is the intended use of this laptop? If it's meant for everyday desktop tasks or video playback, then the graphics part won't affect performance. For gaming, however, the graphics quality becomes crucial. The passmark rating for the 4500U is 1819, while the MX350 scores 2897. Generally, a solid SSD is necessary, and you should choose one that fits your requirements. It's often more cost-effective to purchase a laptop with a smaller HDD and upgrade it to an SSD yourself. Likewise, select the amount of RAM you actually need. Focus less on RAM speeds, as they have minimal impact. You might find it cheaper to upgrade the RAM yourself.
The goal is mainly for CPU-heavy engineering work. Therefore, Ryzen would handle multi-core tasks better. It would also suffice for gaming occasionally. From an economic standpoint, the Ryzen offers more value compared to other options even after upgrading RAM. What would you pick if you had to decide?
That's the solution. You didn't specify a need for high CPU usage. Instead, consider models with Ryzen 5 5500U, which offers multi-threaded performance similar to 4500U but adjusted slightly.
Both models share more similarities than differences.
The 1135g7 features 8 threads with a passmark of 10072, which means all threads are operating at full capacity—a rare situation.
Several operations rely heavily on single-thread speed, with a rating of 2733.
In contrast, the 4500U has 6 threads and a rating of 11220/2469.
I think it’s best to choose the 1135g7 for its single-thread performance.
