There seems to be a problem with the game launching unexpectedly, causing a brief screen glitch followed by a crash.

you mean a black screen? and is the copy legit, and are you using the CD to start the game (aka not using a fixed exe, you have to use the CD the first time, and then add the fixed exe and the dat file) also, are you using the latest patch (if you have the decade edition, then you have) if not, then try updating it to (C&C generals 1.08, C&C generals zero hour 1.04) if you have the zero hour expansion, you have to update both to the lastest patch Do you have directx 9.0 or up are you using a legit copy of windows 10 does your specs meet the minimun requrements what kind of error are you getting? (aka if you are getting a error message after the crash, what does it say)

It appears you have a genuine Windows installation and the game is running without issues, displaying only a brief black screen before returning to your desktop. To obtain the latest patch, you can visit the official website of the game developer or publisher and look for available updates. If you need further assistance, let me know!

Consider launching it in administrator mode. If that doesn’t help, try repeating what I mentioned earlier—it worked for me once when the game would overwrite itself after a crash. Please let me know if it functioned afterward.

It hasn't fixed itself anymore. It performed flawlessly on Windows 8.1 when run with admin privileges and in compatibility settings. I’m not sure what else to try.

Compatibility settings aren't relevant in Windows 10. You didn't necessarily reinstall it after upgrading from Windows 8—just keep the version you had before the upgrade.

My initial response was to reinstall, which I did immediately after upgrading to Windows 10. I plan to test it in compatibility mode disabled.

I've reviewed several resources suggesting the issue stems from missing a valid game copy. It seems there might be a workaround. Check the configuration after the crash—confirm if the resolution is 800 x 600. Disable anti-aliasing, adjust other graphical settings, as your graphics card may not support them or it could be overloading the game. If that fails, try booting with original C&C generals instead of zero hour. If that also doesn't work, attempt to redo step 2 from your original post or use an alternative method. Also, verify your monitor's resolution and whether you're using a laptop with dual graphics (like a dual-NVidia/AMD setup). If applicable, right-click the game (original C&C generals) and try running it through the built-in GPU first, then switch to the dedicated one.
