The Z690 processor doesn't support DDR4 RAM at speeds above 3600 MHz.
Hello everyone. I recently upgraded my setup to Z690 on the ASUS TUF D4 board, equipped with a 12900kf and Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3600 CL18 RAM. When I first assembled the system, I thought I had enabled XMP, and everything booted and posted correctly. After updating the BIOS, the system now refuses to post any RAM speed above 3200. I've tried several fixes—reinstalling the RAM, flashing back older BIOS versions, and re-flashing the 0807 BIOS—but nothing has resolved the issue. I'm unsure whether the problem lies with the RAM or if it's related to the board or software. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Very vexing, it is approved memory. Although obvious, did you check to make sure you're using slots A2 and B2 (if using two sticks of RAM)? Did you clear the CMOS? What did GPU-Z ID your RAM as (just in case you didn't get what you paid for)? Do you have the BIOS Manual? There is a LOT in there. (see attached file) I'm interested in your progress, because I'm looking at this board. 501310316_PRIME_PROART_TUF_GAMING_Intel_600_Series_BIOS_EM_WEB_EN1.pdf
Hello. Thank you for your feedback.
1) Yes, I confirmed both in RAM and BIOS that the RAM is located in A2/B2 slots.
2) I tried clearing the BIOS settings but had no success. I used a jumper on the board without removing the battery.
3) It seems you might have meant CPU Z rather than GPU Z. I verified that. That’s an interesting observation—perhaps you can help clarify.
4) I haven’t reviewed the BIOS manual yet; I plan to do so today. From what I understand, XMP profiles are limited to 3600, and the DRAM speed was adjusted down from the selected 3600 to 3200.
5) No major changes expected, but if you enable XMP with 3600 it won’t work. Any other ideas?
Core frequency relates to the CPU, your RAM operates at 3200 MHz. (I meant CPU-Z). How do you turn on XMP 1 for that motherboard? The clock speeds align with the XMP profile, except for the rate, which is unusual. Do you have access to any other memory (can ask a friend)? Have you reached out to Corsair and Asus?
I think XMP is linked to the AI overclocking configuration. I remember from past experience that I needed to adjust the DRAM frequency manually to 3200, since the system wouldn't accept speeds like 3600 set in the XMP profile. Unfortunately, I don’t have any compatible RAM to try. I reached out to Asus, but they’ve provided an explanation. Could there be a way to determine if the problem lies with the RAM or the motherboard? Honestly, my current impression is it’s a RAM-related issue. When I first assembled the system, posting problems occurred and was only resolved by re-seating the RAM.
I conducted further troubleshooting. I tested one stick in slot A2 and here are the findings. Stick 1; Booted/ posted at 3600 XMP1, but will crash very quickly. Stick 2; Won’t post or boot with 3600 XMP1. Will only run 3200 XMP1.
