I've never attempted to run other tasks during the update process.
Every month I check the update site at my planned time and let it handle it.
It takes about 10 to 15 minutes, after which I return to my regular activities.

It doesn't seem to be hardware, but you can't be certain unless you swap it out. I'd also consider a complete reinstall of Windows if you haven't tried that yet.

Certainly, aim to set the limit around 50% to avoid overwhelming your resources. Unlimited indicates it will consume whatever is necessary for updates. Of course, a hardware engineer with 25 years of experience would grasp this, wouldn't they?

did you have the page file located on drive c? did you transfer any windows file locations to another drive?
