Ping the device's IP address. For instance, "ping 192.168.3.4"

The computer isn't showing IP connectivity through Ethernet, but it's working via Wi-Fi instead.

Turning off Wi-Fi would let you identify the specific connection issue you’re experiencing. When the message reads “request timed out,” it indicates the Ethernet connection is inactive.

That would work if I could reach the router directly from the desktop, but how do I send a ping from the laptop when the desktop isn’t receiving an IP address?

When no IP appears on the desktop, it's unclear what to do to create one.

Do you have another Ethernet cable available? Also, check the Ethernet port on the motherboard to ensure the pins are clean and undamaged.

the ethernet bulb on the router keeps flashing without staying lit, and occasionally the adapter on your laptop attempts to reconnect but doesn’t work, leaving no internet access

sorry to hear that, it seems the cable length is the issue. I attempted a different connection nearby and it functioned perfectly, suggesting the motherboard might be fine.

It's clear the connection between the cable and your router functions properly on your laptop. The remaining issue likely lies with your PC or its built-in network card.
