Based on their objectives for the game, it’s clear why it hasn’t been completed yet—they’re aiming for something big.

However, no one has access to S42 yet, which means we can't comment on it directly. We only have a vague idea of the story—mainly a rough outline—and it seems to be evolving beyond its initial scope because of increased funding. From what we know so far, it hasn’t reached the beta stage yet (we’re still developing ships, characters, levels, and animations). Overall, it appears to be a fair distance away from being in beta.

They're two distinct titles. One is Star Citizen, which will launch at its release date. I'm in agreement. Now let's shift focus to Squadron 42. This mission should finish within three years.

Some believe the first episode of SQ42 is nearly finished and that CIG is hiding it due to spoilers. We’ll find out, but I can only share that I’d really like to watch it.

Absolutely, I'm excited about this too. I miss my Space Sims, Freespace was a favorite, and the classic Wing Commander titles were truly special. I also enjoy good single-player experiences, so I believe it can meet those expectations.

I’d like to highlight two points before you mention feature creep. Could you clarify which features have been added recently? Many people talk about it, but few explain exactly what’s being included. Why is this happening only within three years? We’ve seen engine improvements, handling tweaks, FPS adjustments, and a more detailed physics grid. All these updates benefit the gaming community and CryEngine if they’re shared responsibly. Hopefully they’ll take their time—most older games I play took over three years to develop because they were built for quality, not profit, avoiding bugs and ensuring perfection.

These aspects are quite appealing, and I’m fine with them being part of Star Citizen. My issue lies with the game I committed to—something meant for space simulation, not an MMO. While these updates are intriguing, they don’t enhance the overall experience of a Wing Commander-style space sim. They seem to hinder progress. I just wish to explore and engage in combat again, but I’m not very invested in the ongoing story world.

I believe three years isn't enough even for S42. Using COD as an example, they operated on two-year cycles before shifting to three-year ones. This approach seems to refresh existing games with new content while leveraging the budget of established studios. Keep in mind that CIG has expanded beyond just game development into a full company, with its development funds growing more than fivefold—something that would have significantly altered their initial planning unless they managed the surplus carefully. EBig Grin would also illustrate this point, as it took roughly five years, with the final stretch focused on releasing a modest yet solid title. I’d prefer seeing progress sooner, but I think their current schedule remains sensible given the scope of the project.
