Starcraft 2 isn't widely favored by gamers today.
I just noticed that the games people usually talk about are... "Battlefield 4" "Shadows of Morder" "The Witcher 3" "GTA V" "CS:GO" I almost never see typical "gamers" (besides those on the team liquid forum) talking about Starcraft 2? So, what makes Starcraft 2 not appealing to the masses? It's a pretty fun RTS game, that's really competitive and has custom maps. In fact, the last expansion is about to be released and I don't see much hype going on.
Well, besides the age of the game and the fact that many players have grown weary of it, it presents a much tougher challenge compared to most popular titles. Casual players tend to avoid being roflisted unless they dedicate time to practice and study strategy. Plus, because it's a one-on-one format, the stakes are very high—losing means you're clearly at fault. It reminds me of why few people play chess anymore.
Lol stands apart from other titles entirely. It isn't seen as a close rival to Sc2 or even a direct match for Quake 3.
To the extent that individuals express it, the league really ruined Sc2 among everyone I talk to who still played it seriously.
