It's a classic title, and modern MOBAs have largely replaced the RTS category. It's a bit disappointing.
Starcraft 2 is the main game I enjoy. It's a bit more demanding mentally now. I stopped playing HotS because I felt the same way, but I returned recently when they expanded the starting workforce from six to twelve and released the LotV beta. Everything has changed quite a lot. It doesn't feel like the same experience anymore. I’m hoping for a revival since most people aren’t really interested anymore except a small group. I also wish they could make it more relaxed so players aren’t laughed at or mocked. They’re reportedly working on those changes too.
The RTS genre seems almost inactive, which is damaging its future. Current interest is low since the market is sparse, recent titles are rare, and even those are hard to remember. Starcraft 2 isn’t the main issue—it’s the absence of strong rivals. It’s surprising given how advanced modern technology is compared to the golden era of RTS games; today’s titles fall short. Roguelikes also show a similar pattern: once popular, they faded, but recent successes have revived the genre. Fighters are another example; while repetitive, they remain relevant due to competition from larger titles. This isn’t the sole factor, but it plays a significant role.
I used to enjoy Wings of Liberty with friends until someone introduced me to Dota. It maintained the competitive vibe but was designed for larger groups and felt more relaxed. Playing with four friends, one would die early and have to wait for the group to finish, which wasn't very enjoyable. Dota offered a smoother experience and fewer repetitive phases like '10 drone, scout, 15 drone expand, spawning pool.' Now I prefer Heroes of the Storm, which is less stressful and has faster matches. In the end, Blizzard won me over.
Previously played a lot of it. Reached the gold league on solo and 2v2 with a friend. Gold isn’t a lot, but we put in a lot of effort to get there, hehe. The 40-minute games began to take a toll on me. It’s tough to stay focused for that long in one match. It’s really enjoyable when your strategy pays off or you have a great game against your opponent. But getting knocked down repeatedly isn’t so fun anymore. Now I mostly play single-player games where I can pause whenever I want and don’t stress about it. Plus, I try to catch D3 each new season for about a month.
It doesn't have to be me. Doing something like Sc2 needs a lot of your time to play well. If you want to do other things—like playing LOL—you might need to put it aside.
It made things way more chill and removed the pressure of competition. Heroes of the Storm does better, honestly—it doesn’t act like it’s anything else and actually feels like a good game.
SC2 finds its place in a specific corner, btw. It's not your usual turn-based strategy game; more like a fast-paced action experience. Classic RTS titles were all about strategy and took their time, lacking the quick, micro-maneuver style SC2 offers. I enjoyed playing it, but for campaigns I stopped. I'm planning to try LotV once it releases, again for campaigns. I appreciate watching Lagtv and its SC2 content, so it's not a dislike—it just doesn't fit my current vibe. If I want a traditional RTS, I'd stick with something like C&C or TA. Back in the day, if you're that old, those games were always talked about in gaming circles because they were pure RTS.
It seems you're expressing frustration about League of Legends or something similar. While you might debate game preferences, I noted your point about League's popularity versus the decline of SC2. The shift in interest likely reflects how many players moved toward mobile games and brought others along.
