It wouldn't be called resentment, just my personal dislike for the game. I believe the drop in popularity stems more from its age rather than anything else. It's odd that *LOL* emerged during that time frame. Playing MMORPGs doesn't stop you from enjoying SC2.
Starcraft never gained widespread popularity due to the steep learning curve involved in micro-managing. It captured attention mainly because esports is largely concentrated in Korea, creating peer pressure to play Warcraft or Counter-Strike. Compared to those games, StarCraft is significantly more challenging. Technically, it faced major issues—described as a "blizzard"—and despite claims of quality, the game primarily targets US audiences and charges subscription fees.
