My advice, build a PC that is compact and not very flashy, using Kensinton locks or similar is actually not a bad idea. Making a sleeper is good if you don't trust the environment.
That's true, the worry about someone taking pieces or information from it—or everything—would really stress me out.
Your availability hinges on the specific institution you attend. When I graduated, freshmen were all in pairs, but you might have better options. Still, you could consider waiting a year or more to secure housing if you can afford it or prefer a more comfortable living situation.
Obtain a tower from an older Windows 98 NEC model and assemble a powerful setup inside it without any visible openings. Keep the inner workings hidden from view.
