Hey there! You probably haven't done anything wrong! But after a few months with laptops, they get really dirty and blocked up. The fans spin louder because dust and gunk slow them down. This makes your CPU heat up and then cut off performance (throttle). It would be good to clean your laptop with compressed air. You have to take the case off and clean everything inside, including the fans. Hopefully that will make things better. It's a good idea to get a cooling pad for your laptop so more air can reach the back. Laptops with 3 or 5 fans help cool the CPU even more. As long as your CPU stays cool, you should get all the performance back. What is your exact model?

I got an Acer Nitro 5 with model AN517-54. I can't tell if it's the fans because CS:GO runs great and gets over 120 FPS, but everything else drops way below 40 FPS.

Turn on MSI Afterburner to see how much your CPU and GPU are using power and what their temperatures are like. Then check HWInfo with sensors and launch a game that you know should be running smoothly. If you see 100% usage or if the CPU is spinning very slowly, that means it's throttling. When the computer gets too hot, it slows down just to keep cool. That causes your game to run at lower FPS than possible.

Look at what is set for your Windows power settings and make sure it says "High" instead of something like "Balanced". This will save battery better.

I set everything on high performance. My GPU hits 100% everywhere except CS:GO. It still runs at 40 frames per second though that's annoying for me. When I start a game, things look great and I get 144+fps, but as soon as the menu pops up, it crashes down to just 40fps.

Follow the steps from my first message. Once your laptop is clean, it starts working again. Most gaming laptops have this problem sometimes.

I guess this could work well, since my PC makes more noise even when nothing else is running. It sounds like that's what's going on too. Also, if I run a lower resolution game, it works really fine for me.
