Is a Core i7 7th gen computer okay?
Is a Core i7 7th gen PC enough for playing games? Yes, it's pretty good. I'm buying this PC soon and want some advice since I know almost nothing about computers. Please let me know if anyone has experience with them or needs help. Thanks so much in advance!
"Good" just means different things sometimes. This CPU was really good back in 2017 when it launched, but it's been way too long since then. It might struggle a lot with newer games that need a lot of power. Think about Indiana Jones and the Great Circle or Clair Obscur; those are pretty recent titles and they list their minimum needs higher than this CPU has now. So if you want to play those new ones, it won't cut it. However, if you're playing older AAA hits or newer games that don't need so much power, this one will probably do a great job for you.
The cost of buying something often decides if you can do what you want. And usually, a graphics card (GPU) will matter way more than just the processor (CPU) when playing games.
The main issue with the 7th gen Intel Core i7 is that it arrived right before something big happened. It was the last top performance chip from Intel with four cores, and then three years later, an older AMD Ryzen chip matched its power. Because of this competition, Intel finally had to start making stronger chips like the standard i5 and higher-end i7 models instead of just sticking with their old tech. But that changes things based on how much you spend and what you hope for yourself. If you want a good system right now, I would suggest getting either an 8th gen Intel Core i7 or a Ryzen 3600 as the absolute best parts to start with.
That's not true. I'm running an i7-7700k and gaming at 4K with 60fps using an RTX 3090. The seventh generation is actually pretty good for its time, even though it only has four cores and isn't the absolute best. But yes, they are still selling them around $100.
On my part, I'm upgrading from the i7-7700k to the 14th gen because that CPU is clearly showing its age. However, if you can get it for free or if your needs are simple, it's still a great choice.
Yeah, at a 4K setting, your CPU becomes the bottleneck more than your GPU. That means your older processor can hide its age pretty well, but even then with only one percent or less drops and stuttering in some newer games or places, you are stuck there. So don't buy an Intel 14th gen laptop, get either a Ryzen 9700X on AM5 or a Core i7 265K instead.
Yeah, but you can get a 12100F/13100F/14100F for less than one hundred dollars and they're quicker than a 7700K. If nothing else is wrong with your PC, you should probably go ahead and buy a 12700KF. All you really need is a DDR4 motherboard, which means you can keep using the same RAM. Maybe even swap out to DDR5 if you want to try the 265K. I'm hoping for a Lake model or waiting on Nova Lake to see how it goes. Mostly, the extra power goes into the graphics card, but there are so many single-player and multiplayer games where you'd miss out on frames per second just because of that.
