BD PROCHOT is a cooling solution. It includes a laptop fan that helps with cooling. However, the performance feels slow, especially at 32W.

It generally indicates another component in the system (besides the CPU) is signaling the CPU to slow down. My thought is likely the VRMs on the motherboard are affected. If the laptop cooling fan isn’t helping by adding a thermal pad, that’s probably where the problem lies. The G4 Mini model isn’t built for sustained high performance from an i7 8700 boost across all cores or even at base speed. I believe HP shouldn’t be allowed to market it with this i7 variant; they should enforce pairing it with the 8700T low-power version, since it won’t meet the minimum 65W requirement needed for full performance.

BD PROCHOT enables other sensors, typically on your motherboard, to limit CPU performance. Bi Directional Processor Hot tricks the CPU into believing the system is overheating, prompting early thermal throttling. If voltage regulators are responsible, you’ll often notice VR CURRENT or VR THERMAL lights turning red in Limit Reasons. Without a detailed schematic of your motherboard, I can’t pinpoint the exact sensor causing the issue. A common list of possible triggers is seldom publicly shared. Don’t stress—your computer may be throttling due to something minor like a faulty or overly cautious sensor. If you owned the board, clearing the BD PROCHOT box in ThrottleStop would prevent the CPU from heeding external warnings. Your system will still thermal throttle if the CPU overheats, regardless of whether BD PROCHOT is inspected. If concern about damage arises, avoid taking action. Keep your CPU running at half its rated speed.
