I haven’t interacted with the IP addresses since I’m unfamiliar with this process. I’ve only been using the icon in the file explorer’s network section. The dropdown didn’t show any external users, but I suspect there might be a solution.

It's more complicated when using a Microsoft account login. You need to use the username with @address.com as part of your email, where address.com is your Microsoft account address. As noted earlier, it's simpler to create a new local account that matches the Windows 7 username and password for better access.

Explain the issue clearly so it’s easier to fix. The system blocks access because you lack permission to reach the PC. Ask your network admin for help.

Did you distribute the directory and confirm user authorization? Is the network configured as private to ensure firewall compatibility?

I’ve clearly outlined the actions required in my earlier message. You don’t need a Windows 10 account with the same username as your laptop login, because once you follow the steps I shared, connecting from your laptop to your Windows 10 device will prompt for your credentials—your Windows 10 password and username.

I haven’t assigned them the same name; it worked once I found the right local username on my desktop (something I’ve had since 8.1 and didn’t realize I needed a different one). I’ve tried your instructions and still see the error before the login prompt. I have the necessary credentials, they recognize each other, but something prevents access. I’m checking the settings to see if there’s an issue, though I think I should have permission.

You might need a different account setup on the laptop. Create a new user there and ensure it’s linked to a private network. Adjust the network settings so other devices can join from the same subnet. Change the IP address in Windows Explorer or set up a shortcut to the PC’s address (like 192.168.1.4) on both machines. Make sure firewall rules allow connections. If you follow these steps, it should connect without issues.

These are precisely the buttons I was using (refer to the photos). I tried searching by IP address but nothing appeared, so I went to the network settings. The first image shows what I see on my desktop, and the second reflects what I see on my laptop. I verified the settings on both devices according to your guidance, and they match as instructed. Still, the error persists. It seems my desktop firewall might be the issue—am I missing something or can I add an IP exception safely?

That doesn't tell me anything at all, just a visual way of saying it's not connecting. Please follow the steps and the other stuff I've said above, if not I'm wasting my time here. It's not going to magically show up on your network, you have to tell it the address that the computer is at that you're trying to connect to and then verify (credentials) that you are allowed to access that computer.
