I’d choose the 3700X because AM4 keeps supporting an additional CPU generation, while LGA1200 won’t work with Intel’s upcoming uArch update. The next Skylake refresh might help, but it probably won’t make much difference based on what we know now.

Choosing a top-end processor doesn’t necessarily mean it will last longer; longevity depends more on usage and care than the price of the chip itself.

Uncertain about the outcome. It's unclear if anything changes when Zen 4/*Something* Lake is introduced.

It's true, the Pentium 4 gained attention during the 2000s.

Not only then; similar issues arose with Core 2, Sandy Bridge, and more recently with Zen 1 and Kaby Lake. The situation worsened when i7s were introduced, though Zen 1 had a better launch. It's likely that in two years AMD or Intel will release an outstanding new design, rendering current i9/Ryzen 9 models obsolete. High-end components are therefore not advised, and many opt for mid-range options like i5 or Ryzen 5. The price drop of the Ryzen 7 makes it a sensible choice to purchase now.

It's accurate, though I doubt Intel will make the same error once more.

They also earned revenue by attracting both pre-built and laptop users who upgraded for better performance. After all, if a Chrome browser barely runs on a low-end laptop, speed really matters—especially with those slow 4000U models.

You can always boost the CPU if it becomes a problem. A 3700X and B550 setup (available by the 16th) is ideal. You can also install an R9 49xx later.
