Best CPU for gaming?

I currently use an i7 4790 and want to upgrade. I’m seeking a CPU that delivers top gaming performance while lasting many years. My budget stays below $800. Would you recommend the i9 10900k or is there another option within that price range that could offer better gaming results?

you can't get higher performance than the 10900k, as much of a waste of money as it is. No guarantee that it will last you many years either.

10900k marks what’s left of the 14nm era. Not worth it—Nvidia’s next-gen launch is delayed, so it’s best to start fresh then.

We cannot foresee the future. It's likely that 5nm devices in 2022-2023 will advance so rapidly that the 10900K becomes obsolete.

I focus on high-performance gaming and need a reliable CPU for at least four years. My current i7 4790 can sometimes struggle under heavy loads. Would you consider a more affordable option that still meets my needs?
