I just made a recent change to my system. I installed an i3 9100f because it offers good value and strong reviews, and paired it with a Z170A Gaming pro carbon board since it supports LGA 1151. For RAM, I upgraded to 8GB DDR4 3000 MHz, which is compatible with the new motherboard. I placed my fan zip-tied to avoid interference from capacitors in the bracket. The indicator light still shows a CPU reading issue. I managed to secure the fan without removing it, but I’m worried about the POST problem since the monitor doesn’t respond. I haven’t cleared CMOS yet, but if that helps, I’ll try it. I also added a couple of drives to my case, though I’m not sure if they’re the cause. My PSU is 500W. I’m considering a processor upgrade if you can find an affordable motherboard with USB-C and enough DDR4 slots for 3000 MHz. I’m based in the USA.
You secured the CPU cooler with a zip tie, but it seems the motherboard can't accommodate that CPU model.
But it doesn't work with your setup. You need specific chipsets like H310, B360, B365, H370, Z370 or Z390 to run an 8th or 9th generation CPU. Only certain boards support it above 2666MHz, and with just one stick you're limited to single-channel mode, cutting performance in half compared to dual channels. This platform only allows dual-channel operation. The temperature drop suggests the Intel stock cooler might be more effective for such a small build.
The fan touching the heatsink is just a 6th or 7th generation i5 built with a newer manufacturing method. It shares the same quad-core design and lacks an active GPU. Upgrading to older CPUs like H310, B360, B365, etc., won’t hurt performance. The real upgrade path lies in getting a Z370, Z390, or similar board.
