Really? Where do you think people begin? I've been working on this Dell Optiplex 980 and haven't reached the motherboard or processor yet. I'm not sure how I'm proceeding, but I hope I can figure it out eventually. Please don't be too critical of me, or explain why you replied at all. I'm seeking guidance, not judgment. Do you think anyone asking for help should understand exactly what they're doing? Consider another forum if needed.
I checked kaby lake filters; it seems you added one. Are Intel Core i7-8700K compatible with it? Will it work for all kaby lakes? I’m gathering benchmarks and user reviews to paste into user-benchmark. Need a simpler method?
Of course, I've covered that too. I didn't really get the chipset details, but sometimes you have to learn the hard way. When I claim I'm not tech-savvy, I mean I'm intentionally showing myself a bit of a beginner. I'm admitting I'm not as knowledgeable as you and others here, and I made a mistake. Also, I'm not sure what you mean by zipties—those seem to go straight into the holes without pressing on anything, and the fan doesn't vibrate much when turned on, which shouldn't be putting pressure on anything.
8700K is an 8th-gen model, your motherboard is compatible with 6th-gen chips. That implies Intel CPUs from the 6 series. It seems you're aiming for something mid-range rather than top-tier. If you're targeting an i3 with single-channel RAM, dual-channel would be ideal—it's significantly quicker. Could you share the motherboard or GPU you have? If you can provide either, I'd recommend upgrading to a suitable CPU and board. For long-term gaming plans (about five years), a 6-core processor is a solid choice. You'll find affordable options from both AMD and Intel, such as AMD Ryzen 2600/3600 or Intel i5 9400. Choosing a 4-core chip in 2020 for modern games would likely limit your experience. If you only play older titles, it might not be an issue, but definitely opt for six cores.
Order a 300 series motherboard and your issue should be resolved. Should it be the heatsink or the fan? Probably not the heatsink.
This works with your CPU, but you'll need to check some measurements to confirm it fits your case.
