12 cores not necessary for gaming? Considering 3800x and 3900x might match single-core performance, would I invest in those extra cores for a gaming machine? The 50% more cores sounds reasonable, but would any game actually use them?

Maximums around 3600 or 3700x seem too high. 12 cores for gaming is essentially excessive. 16 cores even more problematic.

It varies by game. Generally, 12 core servers are suitable for a medium-sized Minecraft server with you playing alongside it.

Formerly, people discussed the same points about 6-core and 8-core Ryzens versus 5 GHz 4-core Intel chips. Nowadays, current games are much better optimized for multiple cores. It also makes sense to use software like x264 for improved streaming quality.

Comparing with a 4/4 format shows none of the new options come close to that limited performance. A 6/12 or 8/16 setup will remain effective for a long time. These configurations provide three to four times the threads of the i5-7600k. A 12/24 is excessive, and by the time threads become useful, speed will likely be lost. The same applies to 16/32.

The R7 3800X seems set to be the top choice for high-end gaming. I'm curious about its performance compared to the i7 9700K.

Absolutely, I'm quite at ease with my 2 1700's and they've served their purpose effectively for several years.

Not to even mention, that despite the 7600k not performing great....it didn't perform "bad". Nothing was unplayable. If we are at that point now, versus a technology that has been over a decade as the standard...how long will it take for 6/12 or 8/16 to become obsolete? I'm not holding my breath.
