I set up a new setup on a B450 with 2600X and 32GB RAM at the beginning of this year. By January next year I’ll have to upgrade my media server, which runs Windows 7. Upgrading to Windows 10 would be straightforward, but the FX8350 and its AM3+ chip are quite outdated. I still have another 32GB of 3200MHz DDR4 in storage, so moving my gaming rig into the media server makes sense. I’m keen on checking how performance and cost compare, but it has to be worth it. Adding another 6 or 12 cores seems unnecessary since my current system handles most tasks well. My games already demand many cores, and I’m planning to future-proof by 2020. Prices might drop a bit by then, but I’d likely need a newer platform—probably AM4 or better—by the time my next major overhaul happens.
