Bhyve isn't the best choice for beginners. I prefer Electronics Wizardry, as it offers more practical hypervisors. If you have idle machines, PROXMOX is worth checking out—it provides significantly greater features and supports ZFS. For those without extra systems but with a Debian Linux desktop, QEMU and virt-manager pair well together. Both are powerful yet lightweight, featuring user-friendly interfaces.

it's probably not worth much. it's a basic box built from old components. i assembled it for whole-home storage on a nas setup, though i realized it could support virtual machines and i was curious about it. running a 7th gen celeron on an asus z170 with 8gb ram and wd nas drives, booting from three usb drives.

VMM wasn't activated. That was the fix. It runs smoothly from the start.
