I'm working on bringing my old Toshiba C655 up to snuff for gaming titles like World of Warcraft, Fortnite, and Minecraft. I plan to boost the RAM, overclock the CPU, install custom cooling, and use YouTube tutorials to maximize performance. I’ll also look into adding more video memory. Overall, I believe a better graphics card and CPU would be the best upgrades.

You’ll handle virtual memory by using system tools, boost GPU memory through compatible upgrades, and consider specialized cooling solutions. Investing in an Athlon II only for nostalgia isn’t worth it unless you need it for old Windows XP games.

my athon 2 dual core mobile runs okay at 2.2 ghz, but there are better options for the s1 socket. I’m looking for something with 2.5ghz or higher. For demanding games like Far Cry, it’s tough, but the Xbox One S offers 8GB RAM and a custom AMD CPU at 1.75ghz plus a high-performance AMD Radeon GPU at 914MHz. My Chromebook performs better than that setup.

Your main characteristic is virtual RAM. Paging is a method where your computer moves data from disk to RAM when it runs low, but it’s very slow and not reliable. You can speed up a GPU core, but that’s only possible on laptops—overclocking won’t help much here. Even with MSI afterburner tweaking, you’ll hit thermal or power limits quickly. This machine uses a replaceable CPU socket; most laptops have the chip soldered in. Changing it is possible, but BIOS compatibility isn’t guaranteed for every processor. Game consoles differ entirely—they’re built for tight hardware and software integration, optimized for specific hardware. PCs must support a vast range of configurations, while consoles are designed to run efficiently on narrower setups.

So regardless of how powerful the CPU is, this laptop simply won’t handle the games you mentioned. Virtual memory isn’t really there, and the Windows swap file just stores data that’s not currently needed, but it’s much slower than your actual RAM. Real RAM is essential for running applications smoothly. Virtual video memory doesn’t exist either. You can’t just compare CPU speeds without knowing what you’re comparing them to. Those older consoles have a huge edge in performance and more cores, plus way better graphics power. Your laptop can’t even be overclocked. It lacks hardware acceleration for web browsing, so streaming services won’t run smoothly. Upgrading this machine is essentially pointless—it’s outdated for modern tasks. A new budget laptop with a solid CPU, more RAM, and an SSD would work perfectly for browsing and light games. The only AMD model I found is an older APU that can’t be upgraded and won’t perform well.

Hello, thank you. I understand the situation and will try my best to assist. The available processor choices vary by model, and a Phenomen II S1 chip might be the only upgrade option. I’m not certain if your system can handle it. Could you provide the laptop’s model number?
