I initially expected 5Ghz, but ran the 6700K at 4.9Ghz. It worked, though at around 1.47v. Then I lowered the frequency.
I play in 4K resolution and haven't noticed Zen 3 enhancing my setup compared to what I currently have, so I’m not planning an upgrade anytime soon. Still, I got lucky with a golden sample 3900XT that was cheaper than a 5800X, which means I might get a modest multicore boost with a 5900X at best. I’ll hold off for Zen 4 or later.
I use a 3700x setup, but I'm setting up a build for my fiancé now. I planned for a 3600x at first, but decided to go with a 5600x instead.
It's rumored to be quicker than an i7 10700K, but we'll find out.
Some enthusiasts examine those numbers, but the truth is that most CPU overclocking happens automatically or manually tweaking the CCXs doesn’t yield much extra performance. Many of these chips are already fine-tuned, leaving little room for improvement (hoping for better results with Ryzen 5000). While I push every setting that’s stable, most folks don’t go that far.
It seems the 3000 series chips don’t gain much beyond the overall core boost. My 2700X runs at 3.8ghz all-core on auto. I’ve tested an All-core All-thread OC of 4150mhz with SMT disabled, achieving 4.3ghz and solid results. Overclocking isn’t too bad, and the gains are decent. Looking at other chips, especially older models, my Ryzen Athlon units see about a 50% boost from manual tuning—similar to my Ryzen 1200 and 1400, though closer to 40% thanks to higher base and boost speeds. Naturally, top-end chips have less room for tweaks, which isn’t surprising. This trend has been consistent over time.
