Ensure you have a controller featuring analog sticks for steering and progressive triggers for throttle and brake.

I became comfortable using a keyboard after many unsuccessful tries in GRID lol. I still have an old original Xbox controller that I occasionally use.

I recently began playing Euro Truck Sim 2 using only my keyboard. It was challenging at first, especially with the constant key presses. After that, I purchased a budget Xbox controller from Gamestop, which greatly improved the experience. The added advantage is my son can now play with the same controller, making it more convenient for him too. Eventually, I intend to upgrade to a Logitech G27 setup, but that depends on my budget. I mainly enjoy racing and driving games.

To some degree, players are expected to use a controller or steering wheel, though others can enjoy racing games via keyboard input. DiRT Rally may be especially challenging to manage with a keyboard. I rely on a Dual Shock 4 wireless controller paired with an Input Mapper, which treats the gamepad as a 360-degree controller in Windows. While I own a steering wheel, I often prefer not to set it up and then take it away after playing. Even with a gamepad, DiRT Rally remains a demanding experience.
