I've never played a racing game on PC, yet I was thinking about trying Dirt Rally after reading its excellent reviews. How do you actually steer in this version? On the console, the turning feel depends on the analog stick angle, but with a keyboard you lose that control—pressing or not pressing a key determines the direction. Would you need a steering wheel or something similar?
Several racing or game titles have optimized their input methods using a mouse and keyboard (GTA 5 is a good example). Still, controllers or wheels can offer improved handling on a PC.
Typically there are control features to simplify steering using the keyboard, the main technique involves fast button presses or taps for smoother adjustments. However, many users prefer controllers or a physical steering wheel based on their preference for simulation realism.
I rely on a controller (Xbox One) for racing games. Using a keyboard or mouse doesn’t suit me. A steering wheel isn’t necessary, but a controller adds a lot of fun for me, even though I’m not a dedicated racer.
Wheel user can't return to Con for Sims, especially not with a keyboard.
Absolutely! Besides racing titles, titles such as Bastion, Dust, and Ori and the Blind Forest become significantly more enjoyable when played with a controller. It’s surprising how much a controller can enhance the experience. Apologies if this wasn’t on topic.
Games similar to Dirt Rally perform well with a physical steering wheel and pedals, though they also work with controllers and KBDK.
I rely on a controller because it performs adequately, costs little, and occupies minimal space. Racing wheels cost a similar price but often lack comfort (what you pay influences the feel). I tried a racing wheel once—it felt okay in some games, but its bulk made storage and setup difficult. My new desk didn’t fit well, and it didn’t function properly due to my desk’s shape. I’m unlikely to try racing wheels again since they’re too cumbersome; my controller meets my needs, so I’m okay with less precise control and quicker setup.
