Ubuntu works well, but for older systems without advanced needs, Mint or ElementaryOS could be preferable. Linux is a better choice than XP in most cases. Performance remains similar, and updates happen regularly on Linux versus infrequent updates on XP. Plus, Ubuntu and its versions are straightforward to use even for less experienced users. I helped my mom convert a C-casette using Ubuntu and Audacity on a PC that ran XP before.

Based on the machine specifications, a Win7 starter could work. Alternatively, Windows 10 with Bing might be suitable for some devices. I’m not sure if ChromeOS can be installed. Both ChromeOS and SteamOS run on Linux at their core.
