Hello. I discovered an old PC once used in a hospital. The machine functions properly, but this particular Windows XP version is quite unstable. I’m trying to resolve the issue by either obtaining a fresh Windows XP key or switching to another operating system at a low cost. It would be helpful to be able to use the computer and access the internet. I have no idea where to purchase a new OS for free or on a budget. If you can guide me or assist directly, that would be really appreciated. I’ve searched online for details, but the information is limited.

Assisted a colleague with the problem; I can share an SP2 ISO for XP via Google Drive. Let me know your email if you're interested. EDIT: Do you want the key or just the installation?

I converted a physical disk into an ISO file using certain programs and then shared it online since another person might benefit from it.

I believe Ubuntu is a solid choice. It’s reliable and widely used, making it a great option for your needs.

I prefer XP more than any Linux release, anytime. I’d choose XP if there’s a method to obtain it for roughly a dollar. Updated note: How does SteamOS compare?

It seems my PC specifications for SteamOS aren't suitable. I believe Ubuntu will work for now. If not, I'll return to the site for assistance.

OP intends to explore the internet. Using XP in 2016 isn't advised for browsing. Comparing XP to Linux could lead to discussions in the non-techies thread. I must try to keep myself from doing it. Medical computers are relied upon until they stop working. It's unlikely the hard drive would function properly during setup. You may discover that an older Windows XP system isn't suitable for Ubuntu; better options would be a Linux live CD, the DoD LPS live CD, or installing Debian and choosing a lighter desktop version.
