Hello, I began using Tailscale to back up one of my Synology NAS at home onto a remote Synology NAS at work. I turned to Tailscale because the network at work is secured in a way that blocks external connections, making it necessary for backup operations. I have some issues I'm facing when trying to use it on other devices and was hoping for guidance from user forums rather than support channels. I found a forum but noticed it's read-only for non-admins. Should I post my questions here or look for another place to get help? Thank you in advance for your advice. Best, -a-

It would have been simpler to pose the inquiry directly from the start.

There are many YouTube videos on the topic. I also recommend checking out zerotier. I've just begun using it—it's really helpful. You'll need some networking skills.

Hi @AlexAtkin and @ianm_ozzy, just wanted to share my thoughts. I’ll post the question in a new thread and check Zerotier to understand what it offers. Thanks!

It seems ZeroTier on DSM7 needs Docker CLI. I’m new to Docker and its ideas, so I’ll treat this as a backup plan. Thanks for the tip!

I believe the zero-tier concept might rely on WireGuard VPN, though it's not 100% certain. You don't need Docker knowledge to implement zero-tier. Create an account in zero-tier, then configure a 'network' via their website. Install the software and link it to the network using simple commands in Linux. On the Zero-Tier site, approve the connections. Devices like Windows, Mac, phone, or iOS get assigned IPs within the network. I haven't tried Tailscale, but I expect it to work similarly.

The DSM7 no longer has a ZeroTier version available. Earlier, there was one for DSM6.

They clearly expected you to upgrade to a new NAS. You should have seen the guidance there: https://docs.zerotier.com/synology/

It seems best not to interrupt recovery from the previous night while responding. Anyway, I've been experimenting more with Zerotier. My plan is to use my router as the sole device on the home network connected via OPNsense. Relevant ports will be redirected to a virtual machine running Nginx as a reverse proxy manager, then forwarding to the services I need (like https). It appears routes can be added within Zerotier itself, and possibly in Tailscale as well. There are reports that Zerotier doesn't collect any data. It's likely similar for Tailscale too. I don't fully trust them. I'm using Truenova Scale at home with standard Windows shares. My NAS should work the same, assuming it does. I aim to reach Windows shares via a key-based SSH connection through the Zerotier network (to the virtual machine), with proper port forwards to the NAS.
