Hey, you're thinking about getting a 14600kf and Z690 AORUS Elite or Gigabyte Gaming X Z690. Should I upgrade the BIOS to make it compatible with the 14th generation chips? These boards are from the 12th or 13th gen, so they might not support newer CPUs right out of the box. If you need a BIOS update, do you have an older CPU that can be used for that purpose? Probably not necessary if both the CPU and motherboard are brand new. You don’t really need another older CPU to update the BIOS. It sounds like a solid upgrade path with your current specs—just stick with DDR4 RAM and a Ryzen 7000 series if you want, paired with the GB 3070 graphics. Let me know if you need more details!

The optimal choice is to go as far as possible from the 14th generation. The 13th or 12th models work just as well. The 7800x3d significantly outperforms the 14600k at the same price point. In any case, the 14th generation is essentially a scam by Intel with no redeeming features.

I just reviewed the Ryzen 7000 series info, sorry for the mix-up. The 13600KF should work perfectly.

I think it won't be a major improvement. You might be able to skip it. I just moved from 7700K to 12400 since I couldn't get W11 installed otherwise. Why would you choose a Z690 over a B760, Z790 or even Z890? Typically, premium boards include a BIOS flashback button that should function without a CPU. If you take that path, think about swapping the Intel ILM for a Contact Frame—there are affordable and reliable options. Edited October 28, 2023 by leclod

For a budget-friendly choice, consider a 5800X3D with B550/X570. If you prefer better value, opt for a 7800X3D and B650. The 14th gen is essentially a Raptor Lake refresh, providing solid performance gains at a lower cost and improved cooling. Keep in mind, you'll likely need to update the BIOS beforehand; mid-range to high-end Z690 boards support BIOS flashback, letting you upgrade without installing new CPU, memory, or graphics cards.

Other choices exist that can match or beat them at a lower cost, so it's not the only option...Ryzen 7000 line, 13th generation Intel, Ryzen 5000 series, etc.

No, that's not correct. The price matters, but the 13600k is actually more affordable and delivers the same results.

Everyone gets charged too much these days, that’s clear to me too. You’re not treating people right. I didn’t mention cost either—just that the processor is still solid. Edited October 28, 2023 by leclod

It’s hard to measure quality without a price reference. The A800 is an excellent GPU. That statement is misleading since it’s priced at around 10,000 dollars. Everything seems fine when you consider the cost. It’s unclear why this feels unfair.
