The FS S3900 works well, but keep in mind it’s a layer 2 device with minimal L3 capabilities. This means it likely won’t function as a DHCP server.

It includes a DHCP relay as well. I prefer to view all my DHCP leases on the router, even when the switch manages certain subnets.

He cannot rely solely on that switch; it wouldn't be sufficient compared to something like an L3 switch.

I’m using it as the sole switch. I also need a router, and the same applies to an L3 switch because a switch lacks a firewall and similar features.

It varies based on the complexity of tasks and the L3 switch model you have. There are switches that handle most functions like firewalling, DHCP, and routing. The only gap might be VPN support.

In the under a few thousand dollar range, you won’t typically encounter more than ACLs and certain routing protocols. I haven’t seen any L3 switches supporting NAT, though I’m open to being corrected.

Relies on the amount of NAT traffic you wish to monitor. I recall the Cisco Nexus 9000 series can handle NAT with a limit of 1023 entries, and the Catalyst 9500 also supports it, though I don't have the exact cap.

I doubt I'll ever encounter them, though maybe lower costs will appear for switches with this capability.

Building your own pf-sense setup can be worthwhile, but buying from Netgate offers convenience and support. Consider your needs and resources before deciding.

You can set up PFSense on a computer if one is available. If you plan to purchase new equipment, the choice between Netgate and another manufacturer’s box, or making a router yourself from parts, seems fairly balanced.
