Its a whole new operating system , It transfers all files that you have on your laptop/pc, You will not lose anything , Its a fairly large update, let it install over night if you have slow speeds, Just remember to update all your drivers to 10

It's an entirely new operating system, but I do believe when you do the upgrade you can choose to keep your data. You should probably contact microsoft support about it though if you want to be super sure
