Correct, that is one of the big differences between X570 and B550. More NVMe M.2 slots, X570 chipset can allocate PCI-E 4.0 lanes to the extra M.2 slots. B550 only allocates PCI-E 3.0 lanes to the extra M.2 slots. If you are only going to be using 1 (or 2) NVMe M.2 SSDs, no need to worry. B550 16 PCI-E 4.0 lanes to GPU (from CPU) 4 PCI-E 4.0 lanes to primary NVMe M.2 slot (from CPU) 4 PCI-E 3.0 lanes to second NVMe M.2 slot (from B550 chipset) X570 16 PCI-E 4.0 lanes to GPU (from CPU) 4 PCI-E 4.0 lanes to primary NVMe M.2 slot (from CPU) 4 PCI-E 4.0 lanes to second NVMe M.2 slot (from X570 chipset) 4 PCI-E 3.0/4.0 lanes to second NVMe M.2 slot (from X570 chipset) B550 boards typically has more features, as they were released much later the X570. For instance, the ASUS Crosshair VIII Formula is another X570 alternative. You could add watercooling for VRMs and multiple USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, but the Crosshair VIII Formula costs around $580 versus the Hero model at about $380. That difference doesn’t affect the GPU performance. Where are you hearing this? The Ryzen 3000 and 5000 series CPUs offer 20 PCI-E 4.0 lanes, regardless of whether you go with an X570 or B550 motherboard. Typically, 16 lanes reach the top PCI-E X16 slot for the GPU, while 4 lanes connect to the first NVMe M.2 slot. The second NVMe slot uses PCI-E 3.0 lanes from a B550 chipset. Thanks. I'm trying to figure out which components to pick but I'm stuck on the motherboard. It seems Crosshair Hero is worth $100 more than Taichi. The B550 is newer, but I like the X570 more because of my processor and the CMOS/BIOS buttons—maybe it has some nice features. I think overclocking could be useful later for the CPU. Regarding RAM, I'm not sure what to choose since most of my build is going premium; some parts cost a lot and might not be worth it.
