It's quite different from Skyrim. The gameplay feels unique, and the story is much richer and more detailed. It can be challenging and takes a long time, especially if you aim to finish everything. I've spent over 100 hours playing and haven't completed it yet, nor do I have the DLCs. You can enjoy it without prior games or reading novels. The in-game journal contains plenty of details you might want to know if you feel like you're missing something. You might not catch every reference, but it's still worth the investment.

Witcher 3 stands out as the top RPG I've experienced in nearly five years, offering a distinctive approach.

You're referring to Skyrim, aren't you? That's correct. Completing each mission requires effort >. I'm limited to Steel Plate and Nightingale Armor.

I'm discussing the Witcher series. I see why some people are likening it to Skyrim because they notice big contrasts. Skyrim offers a massive open world with continuous loading, whereas Witcher features expansive areas separated by loading screens. The voice acting in Skyrim is often seen as underwhelming at best compared to Witcher 3, which delivers outstanding performances. The narrative in Skyrim is engaging but straightforward with limited branching options, while Witcher 3’s story is richly detailed, offering numerous endings and side quests that rival main quests in many other RPGs. In combat, Skyrim emphasizes player-driven character creation, while Witcher 3 lets you play as Geralt the Witcher, honing your skills as a master swordsman.

I'm not focused on determining which game is superior... I enjoyed both quite a bit.

It seems like you're referencing a conversation about the Witcher 3. Would you like to continue or clarify your point?

It wouldn’t cause any harm, even though I haven’t delved deeply into The Witcher or The Witcher 2 yet. There’s a wealth of background information in the game, but grasping the fundamentals is sufficient. If you’re intrigued enough, you’ll discover ways to explore more about it. It stands out as one of my top favorite titles ever played, and for those who enjoy single-player RPGs, it promises a highly satisfying experience. You won’t face much concern regarding duration or challenge intensity. On the toughest or second-hardest settings, the fighting remains engaging throughout, and progress isn’t easily bypassed through leveling alone. It’s an energetic combat system centered on parries and two distinct dodge methods, always rewarding you for staying safe. It adds value to your skill development. Since I’m away, I can’t log my playtime on GOG Galaxy, but I estimate around 300 hours for two full runs of the core game plus both expansions once. That includes most side missions, though I don’t aim for complete map completion. The game also features optional content that can be skipped, but its side quests are richly voiced and written to match the main story well.

I was highlighting the variations because everyone tends to compare these titles. While Witcher 3 performs much better overall, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s inherently more enjoyable. Others might prefer simpler experiences and wouldn’t mind Skyrim as a more straightforward option.

Although Im not usually an RPG player, this game is absolutely amazing! Playing the first games may help you a bit with knowing the characters but its perfectly playable as a standalone. The side quests are very good. I normally get bored really quickly by sidequests, these ones are all different and creative. Although the contracts can feel a bit repetative at some point. The world itself is beatifull and I've spend hours just riding around on my horse through Velen and Skellige. The DLC's are relatively expensive but worth it for sure, the Hearts of Stone extension will keep you bussy for about 15 hours (10 hours if you dont do all the side quests / constracts). The Blood and Wine extension adds a whole new map (which is absolutely beatifull) and add another 20+ hours of gameplay (contracts excluded).
