I think Yrden initially locked up the spirits so you could land some hits. Probably they changed it later to fix a bug, or the ghost count was too high and stuck at the sign. I’m inclined to believe it got removed because it felt too strong—maybe it slowed them down briefly when right over the sign, but then moved away and you couldn’t hit. It’s really frustrating. Back then it was the main purpose of Yrden, but now it does nothing useful except for a few bombs. Quen is your best bet. If you can dodge most attacks, he’ll always take a hit, but you can keep dodging long enough to spam Quen whenever you’re hit. That way, you can defeat any foe at any level. His damage is terrible, so it’ll take a while, but it’s doable. Treasure chests are more interesting when guarded by tougher enemies, like a chest with level 15 gear protected by a level 20 foe. I don’t remember a Leshen spawning in the main map, especially not near White Orchard. Maybe it appears in a later mission or somewhere else. The ghosts are usually intangible and can’t be harmed without Yrden. Sometimes they attack and you can hit them, but they’re usually invisible. They work well against drowners and nekkers, or occasionally later when you face groups of humans.
