Hello, I'm setting up a home server and exploring an OS for it. When uploading files, everything should pass through the SSD before going to the HDD. It needs to support third-party extensions like Plex Media, all under a budget of around $100 USD. I'm looking for a straightforward license with minimal features for a home setup. I'd appreciate any suggestions. Linus shared a video while working for NCIX about a home server and demonstrated the OS I'm interested in. Best regards, and don't forget to give your motherboard a good pat!

Windows Server 2012 is available in bundles with restricted capabilities. Higher tiers offer more features, but you won’t find a license under $100 unless you take specific actions like piracy or purchasing from Reddit. It’s safest to opt for a Windows 7 license, which you’ll be satisfied with. I previously ran a Win7 key on my server but had to upgrade to Server 2008 since Win7 doesn’t support systems with three or more CPUs—my setup has four quad-core processors. If you still prefer the server brand, Essential is sufficient. R2 simply marks it as the second release, similar to Windows XP Pro SP2 (Service Pack 2).

I checked the details and looked into it further. Would anyone confirm whether this product is available as a single license?

I'm checking Windows Home Server 2011 and I've seen many videos about it. You're looking for a way to get it for under $100, not the 2012 version. Not the Windows 8 stuff—just the 2011 edition.

That is outrageous..... So for every client on my server they would have to purchase this? As this is a home server I will have about.... 10 computers connected to this, so license for each one?

That Reddit post offers keys. I've tried asking the person there if they have a 2011 key; otherwise, a 2012 R2 costs $10.

Yes, the main goal of a SBS is to run LDAP or Active Directory services for user login, print servers, and similar needs without the high cost of a $10k installation. It's similar to how a tattoo shop operates.

I'm not sure, but for a home data server with backups and media services like Plex, Windows 10 or Windows Server might be better options.
