Windows Server 2012? What Da Heck!
Hello, I'm setting up a home server and exploring an OS for it. When uploading files, everything should pass through the SSD before going to the HDD. It needs to support third-party extensions like Plex Media, all under a budget of around $100 USD. I'm looking for a straightforward license with minimal features for a home setup. I'd appreciate any suggestions. Linus shared a video while working for NCIX about a home server and demonstrated the OS I'm interested in. Best regards, and don't forget to give your motherboard a good pat!
Windows Server 2012 is available in bundles with restricted capabilities. Higher tiers offer more features, but you won’t find a license under $100 unless you take specific actions like piracy or purchasing from Reddit. It’s safest to opt for a Windows 7 license, which you’ll be satisfied with. I previously ran a Win7 key on my server but had to upgrade to Server 2008 since Win7 doesn’t support systems with three or more CPUs—my setup has four quad-core processors. If you still prefer the server brand, Essential is sufficient. R2 simply marks it as the second release, similar to Windows XP Pro SP2 (Service Pack 2).
I'm checking Windows Home Server 2011 and I've seen many videos about it. You're looking for a way to get it for under $100, not the 2012 version. Not the Windows 8 stuff—just the 2011 edition.
That Reddit post offers keys. I've tried asking the person there if they have a 2011 key; otherwise, a 2012 R2 costs $10.
