: Windows Server 2012 R2...How do I grow my virtual hard disk?
I thought maybe I posted this before but it doesn't show up when I search my posts. So I am trying to find a way to make 2 virtual drives bigger without backing them up, formatting them, or recreating the drives. Then I can use that backup data to fill them back in. Unfortunately for me that is the only thing I know how to do. I think there must be another way just to increase size using unallocated space but I just don't know how to do it... If anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it. My virtual drives store has 3.63TB with 2.07TB of free space. The current setup is 2 virtual drives: one for QuickBooks which was allocated 300GB and I am currently using only 179GB. Second drive is all our share folders and data - it was allocated for 1TB and I only have 55GB free. This is the drive I need to make bigger. Any questions please ask... if anyone has any ideas please chime in. As always thanks for your help and support.
What version of Hyper-V are you using? What has your research on this taught you? It looks like just a few links here... https://www.altaro.com/hyper-v/resize-vi...er-v-2016/ https://help.communicationsquare.com/art...-in-hyperv http://woshub.com/dynamic-resizing-of-vi...er-2012-r2 Older versions: https://social.technet.microsoft.co...ut-a-reboot-in-hyperv-3?forum=winserverhyp As always, you need to have a known good backup. Just in case.
I am using Hyper-V Manager from Microsoft, version 6.3.9600.16384. I know there are easy ways to do this, but I haven't found a clear step-by-step guide online. For about one year now, I have been saving all my old files on a big 32 TB NAS because they were older than five years. We run a small fire suppression company and we fix sprinklers for many businesses. Because keeping records is important for safety, the law says I must keep seven years of data. This includes drawings, tests, and reports from engineers about how to calculate any fire suppression system. So I am stuck here. I will check those links just in case they are simple enough for me to figure out what to do and finish it quickly. Thanks so much.
Looks really easy. I plan to do that as my next weekend task.
So I finally got an empty office and i am trying today to expand 2 virtual machines. I already expanded the VM we use to Run and store Quickbooks, Before I expand the VM I use for most of our data I am hoping to get some advice. So i expanded VM-QB01 from 150 gigs to 175 gigs. It looks correct when i check it on hyper v manager . When i check it from a workstation just seeing what it shows on windows explorer its still showing the same size 150gigs with 100 gigs used . There is a step that i havent done yet which is going to diskmanager and expanding the size. When i right click on QB01 the expand size is greyed out and disk 1 where both VM are stored has no unallocated space. Since i was not the one that created these Virtual machines i can only assume the allocated all the space originally . And this is where i am stuck... anyone on here have any ideas on this ? Best Navi
So I figured it out after all, even though I didn't get any replies from you. Just for everyone else's sake, I should share what I learned here. The directions were totally right. I tried using diskmgmt.msc to expand the drive, but my problem was that I did it on the host computer. As soon as I logged into the actual VM, I could see all that free space in Disk mgmt and expanded the drives so they use every extra bit of storage I added. If anyone has questions, please feel free to ask me. Best Ivan
So i am back at this again... I was able to extend it two years ago now i am trying to extend it and the extend option is greyed out... i followed the same steps i did last time... i know that there is room on the hard disk... my capacity is 3.63 TB but i am only using 2.16 TB... but i am not having any luck at all...
The server has two DISKs:
Disk 0 - System reserve (NTSF) with 930.86 GB and it says healthy for boot, pagefile, crashdump, primary partition.
Disk 1 is labeled VHDSTORE with D type, showing 3723.87 GB of NTFS space that is Healthy and Primary partition.
So i am assuming that the VHD store has been allocated for all 3.63 TB from there i go to Hyper V manager and connect to the virtual machine AMDC01... i am trying to expand it in setting i have two hard drives:
The first one labeled AMDC01 is acting as our domain controller, set at a minimum of 200 gigs but only using about 34 gigs. The 200 gig is just the minimum setting so i can only compact or expand... i left it alone because it was already full enough to work.
The next hard drive labeled Data knows that we are currently using 1.94 TB and I have 33 gigs available which is why i wanted to expand this one... so i tried to expand it... i have tried several different sizes... then i actually connected to AMDC01 and went to Disk Management here i see for volumes first two volumes are not labeled, the small first one recovery partition is 300 MB with the same free space next unlabeled volume is EFI System partition 99 MB with the same free space.
Next volume is labeled as © file system NTFS - capacity 199.48 gig and only 169.23 gig free... then there is the fourth and final volume which is the one i am trying to expand labeled as D... file system NTFS capacity 2048.00 gigs with only 33 gig free below that is where you see them as a bar graph so disk 0 has the first three volumes all in blue no un allocated space then it goes to Disk 1 - DATA 2048GB in Blue or allocated space and 752.00 GB of unallocated space which is black... when i right click on the allocated space the extend volume is greyed out when i right click on the unallocated space all options are greyed out and it just shows different new volumes choice normally i would just extend the volume using the size of the unallocated space i had done this process in the past and was able to do it without an issue...
i am assuming that i have enough space on the hard drives again from the host server disk one has 3723.87 gigs and has 1500.50 GB of free space.. can anyone help me figure out what i am doing wrong here please thanks everyone i appreciate your time and your help
You want to add more space by expanding Disk 1 into that empty area? That drive is set up for Master Boot Record (MBR) format, which only allows you to use 2TB of storage right now. You have to delete everything from it and change the setting to GPT format so it can take in all that space.
