: Windows Server 2012 R2...How do I grow my virtual hard disk?
I'm not sure if I understand this correctly. Do I just need to move that specific Disk, or do I have to move the entire AMDC01? First and foremost, thank you for your time. To help me get it right: Our main server is called AMHOST. Inside AMHOST, we have two VHDs (virtual hard drives). One is named AMDC01, which holds our domain files and most of everything else. The other one is called AMQB01, which only has the Quickbooks files and the Quickbooks database manager. The second drive inside AMDC01 is named DATA, where all the shared folders live. That's what I'm trying to expand. Please let me know if this makes sense to you. Thanks so much.
OK, there are two different physical setups here. Your second picture doesn't actually help us try to expand the D volume into unallocated space. You need to delete all data from that 2800GB Disk 1 and turn it into GPT format. Then, move the data back to where it belongs.
Could it be easier for me to tell you how to move things? I don't have a big NAS right now. Just like before, I have several hard drives with many books on them. So could I just copy those data disks from the server to one of my new ones? Then if I change the format on that drive, would it automatically switch back to GPT when I plug it back in and let me choose a different option? Maybe I'll start by moving about 100 gigabytes of old files from the server to our NAS just so I can read them and learn more. Since I didn't set this system up myself, I'm a little worried about messing something up when I format it. Thank you again for all your help!
You only need to move your files from Disk 1 to another place. Erase the current disk partitions and create a new simple volume. Change the format to GPT, assign it the same drive letter as before, and now you can use all that space. Then, copy your data back onto it.
Sorry if it sounds confusing, but I still don't get what you're talking about when you say two different systems. It's actually just one server called AMHost. Inside that server, there are two Virtual Directories (VDDs). The first is named AMDC01 and acts as the main domain. The second is named QB01 and is only for Quickbooks. AMDC01 has two drives: one handles the domain tasks, and the other stores all the important data. I'm not trying to be mean or make you uncomfortable; I just want to say sorry if it was frustrating. It wasn't my fault because I didn't set this server up myself. I'm a family friend who's been helping out since before. I know computers pretty well, but back then I never really dealt with virtual drives in my day job.
It seems like there are two separate parts happening at the same time. The rules from before still apply here too. Is this something someone else needs to worry about?
