As mentioned earlier, my Windows setup became severely damaged after the latest update, and nothing seems to work—even basic commands or USB repair tools. I decided to switch to Ubuntu until I can resolve the issue, since it’s busy season and I don’t have time for gaming. I installed 18.04LTS but it didn’t boot at all, and neither did 16.04LTS. I then tried 19.04, which seems to work perfectly right away. My main questions are about Snap: what is it and how secure is it? I used it to install a game I still play occasionally. Anyone know how well the graphics drivers perform on 19.04? Also, what program did Linus talk about in a recent video that helps run many more Windows games on Linux? I use Ubuntu for my website server, but it’s been a while since I used it regularly. Now that I’m starting fresh with Windows, I thought Ubuntu would be a good change.

If you can't set up Linux, there might be an issue with the system. It's better to identify the problem first before trying a fix. Switching to Linux isn't the best approach.

You mentioned that 19.04 is fine, but other distributions are failing. The issue might be related to compatibility or configuration differences between Ubuntu and the alternative distros.

Windows functions properly initially and operates smoothly before the update caused issues.

Snap is ideal because it packages dependencies together, enhancing stability and compatibility. Linus suggested Proton, which is included with Steam. No extra steps are required—just install Steam and the game should work with Proton Steam.

Unless modifications are made, you must turn on Steam Play in the settings before the feature becomes accessible.

Consider providing details? It seems like a hardware issue at first glance, but the 18.04 LTS version should have been updated with drivers and would be the top recommendation.

19.04 performs great, so I’m not worried about hardware problems. Probably just a concern about my NVMe drive. Samsung 950 Pro if I recall right. I’ll share the specs once I’m back home.

The system uses a 7920x motherboard on an ASUS Rampage board. It features a GTX1080 graphics card paired with two SSDs and mechanical drives, while the OS drive is an NVMe storage. Everything seems normal except for Windows becoming corrupted after an update and the 18.04 installation, which prevents booting afterward.
