Windows 7 or 8.1?
Windows 7 or 8.1?
I’m planning to assemble a $750 gaming PC. This decision has been on my mind since I started compiling the parts list. Should I go with Windows 7 or Windows 8.1? I really like Windows 7 and am fine with it, but I’m worried it might become unsupported before 8, causing compatibility issues down the line. Windows 8 is often criticized for its Metro interface, though I’ve found a tool called StartIsBack that seems to improve the experience. It appears Windows looks nicer visually, and using StartIsBack could make me enjoy Windows 8 as much as I did with Windows 7. However, I’m not entirely convinced. If anyone has used StartIsBack, please share any issues they encountered.
In my opinion, the 7.8 series is a mistake despite being lighter and having the start button reintroduced.

Windows 8.1 is clearly the best choice. Going backward isn't worth it unless you already have it. Also, downloading pirated versions is not a good idea. Technet evaluation copies are available for free!
Choose Windows 8.1 for consistency.
Upgrading to a newer OS might cause problems unless you're certain about compatibility.
I prefer ClassicShell instead of StartisBack, but I can adapt to using the Start menu if needed.
All the changes have improved things. Removing the metro UI makes it much better.
