They've been given the operating system by default for almost all new computers, simply because they don't have a choice—not because they actually want it.
Win 8.1 is just a minor inconvenience for your initial projects. After installing it, the desktop background will appear by default and you can pin essential items to the taskbar regularly. Eventually, the live tiles disappear. I adapted quickly within a few hours and it hasn’t caused any issues anymore. It’s disappointing that you need to work hard to get it running smoothly like in Windows 7, but once configured it works fine.
