The Linux server was mostly used to share files for W2K clients. At home, Linux has consistently been more reliable than Windows since I moved from OS/2 to Linux instead of Windows when I first tried Windows 95—it failed completely within a day. On the more expensive systems, I would reboot every half hour while working, which simplified things. Usually, it crashed before then. However, rebooting four times per hour would reduce productivity by about half. Linux performed much better. It might be that your server disks needed time to activate, leading to delays. If that’s the case, you’re choosing between higher latency and energy savings, risking drive wear from constant use—or opting for longer drive life if you skip the savings. It’s a complex subject with no clear answers.
Win9x utilized a defined amount of RAM divided among three components. I don't remember their identities. It also experienced memory leaks, causing crashes when resources depleted. Windows NT previously managed separate pools for each resource, possibly per application, so it didn’t run out completely. I've tried Windows XP through several versions and a bit of Linux—10 stands out to me the most. It's stable compared to others like Linux or older Windows releases. You can tweak it as needed, unlike some systems, and you can disable or remove unnecessary software.
Besides trying 95 for a short period before it crashed and another time with someone more familiar with Windows, I never worked with 95. It turned out it wasn’t something that could be fixed, so I removed it and switched to Linux. I only remember it frequently crashing and not functioning consistently, while 98 was even more problematic. Vista made things worse, but 2k was a noticeable step forward—essentially the first version that worked. Perhaps your client’s disks need to start up first...
I mainly have it in virtual machines and a few touchscreen devices, using it just to install and troubleshoot problems. Most of them lack internet access, and the software is limited to three programs. Even the touchscreens behave poorly. Luckily, it doesn’t crash too often but requires restarts, making it unstable. It’s frustrating because since ten years ago, each user needs their own VM. Regarding the spyware, it seems the bundled software includes it, but there’s no clear way to remove it without further details.

Server 2000 outperformed in performance; XP needed a Pentium 4 to reach full potential, which explains why Win2k workstation felt like a strange bridge. The biggest complaint about Win2k was its default behavior of enabling IIS, which posed serious security risks. It seems the person behind that decision was probably stuck in a small office near a bus stop.
