Hey there, so I just switched from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 without any issues. Right now I’m using an offline account on this machine, but I was previously logged in with a Microsoft account that’s mainly used on my old Windows 8.1 laptop. If I need to reinstall because the drive failed, I’ve got a new one or changed the motherboard and CPU, so I want everything set up correctly from the start. Can I just put the Windows 8.1 DVD in my DVD drive, re-enter the key (and optionally log in with my Microsoft account), and then upgrade back to Windows 10 afterward? Also, I built the PC myself and installed Windows OEM, so I’m not getting a prebuilt version. PS: during the installation, the package shows “Windows 8.1 OEM” — is that important?

You should be able to do that because your Windows key has been changed to a Windows 10 version.

Changing the motherboard usually requires reaching out to Microsoft for a free product key. With an OEM key, it’s unclear if you’ll be allowed to proceed, but reinstalling might work—just be aware there could be issues if you alter the hardware.

I recently discovered more about OEM models. It turns out that if your motherboard stops working and you need a replacement, you’re in a tough spot—because the key is tied to the board, and you’ll have to spend around $100 just to get a new one.

I had a Windows 7 Pro OEM key and changed my motherboard. When I contacted Microsoft for activation, I mentioned it was intended for just one PC, and it worked properly on the new card while being turned off on the old one.

Replace the motherboard and Microsoft will handle the activation without any further steps needed.

Ich verstehe, dass Sie auf Deutsch suchen. Für die Nummer benötigen Sie wahrscheinlich den Kundenservice von Microsoft in Deutschland.

Sure, happy to help. It seems there were a few options available, including technical support. Let me clarify for you.
