Windows 10 reinstall issue Need help restoring your system?
Hey there, so I just switched from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 without any issues. Right now I’m using an offline account on this machine, but I was previously logged in with a Microsoft account that’s mainly used on my old Windows 8.1 laptop. If I need to reinstall because the drive failed, I’ve got a new one or changed the motherboard and CPU, so I want everything set up correctly from the start. Can I just put the Windows 8.1 DVD in my DVD drive, re-enter the key (and optionally log in with my Microsoft account), and then upgrade back to Windows 10 afterward? Also, I built the PC myself and installed Windows OEM, so I’m not getting a prebuilt version. PS: during the installation, the package shows “Windows 8.1 OEM” — is that important?
I recently discovered more about OEM models. It turns out that if your motherboard stops working and you need a replacement, you’re in a tough spot—because the key is tied to the board, and you’ll have to spend around $100 just to get a new one.
