Windows 10 Metro comes with some pre-installed apps that don't work well together with other image viewers.
I previously assisted a colleague with completing his project setup. Everything proceeded without problems until we switched to the default picture viewer. We tried installing three image viewers—Picasa, FastStone Viewer, and IrfanView—on three separate reset sessions to check for consistency. We avoided Sagethumbs, as we were concerned it might replicate the same problem. The problem arose when changing the default viewer to something other than Photos, which caused the icons of previously installed metro applications to disappear. This behavior stopped when a pre-installed app was open or when the app was closed before restarting. Restoring the default settings in Settings didn’t resolve the issue, nor did running the sfc /scannow utility. Eventually, I transferred my Surface device and copied the icon files from a source to his PC, but only succeeded when using Photos as the default. Please note that these icon files are in .png format. I searched extensively online but found no useful guidance. We haven’t attempted installing any Metro apps to test if the issue persists with new installations, since he primarily uses Xbox instead. The icon changes appear across various contexts—taskbar, start menu, Cortana, search bar, etc. I’m seeking additional advice and any known solutions would be greatly appreciated. * This conclusion was reached based on the apps that were most frequently replaced by users seeking alternatives.
It doesn't seem to be an image rendering issue, or it might be. He uses a single 980 and it has the latest drivers installed.
The icons turn white, suggesting the background transparency in the actual logo vanished. It appears to be displaying a .jpg file instead of a .png.
Brand new parts brand new install. I'll get him to send me a screenshot.
