First off, you can't get Windows 10 for free right now because it hasn't been fully released. There are various dev versions out, but the consumer version is not yet released. Second, Microsoft has on multiple occasions stated that as long as you do the upgrade within the first year of release, it will be free. Third, I would be highly suspect of anything that man did on your computer. There is no way he 'was a guy at windows' it would have been a Microsoft employee and they would have identified themselves as such. There are many phone scams of people claiming to work for 'windows' and that they will log onto your computer and fix it for you if you give them access. They typically install some type of trojan, keylogger, or ransomware.

Upgrading is available for free for a year after the release. You must refresh within that period to retain the benefit; otherwise, you'll lose access. But upgrading during the first year grants permanent ownership.

Microsoft has repeatedly stated that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for users of Windows 7 and 8.1. For Windows 8 users, the transition should occur via 8.1 unless you know otherwise. More seriously, Microsoft (Windows) often uses scam tactics by calling users claiming their devices are faulty and offering remote fixes or software updates. They might also attempt to install malware under the guise of support. Read the article carefully and heed the guidance provided to minimize any harm.

Are customers still interested? Windows 10 is being offered at no cost for users of Windows 7 or 8.1, and there are whispers it might be the final release of the series. New capabilities will roll out gradually, so it's unclear if any charges will apply.

Is someone helping you fix your PC from afar? Make sure it's a trusted friend or relative.

It's complimentary for Windows 7 users, no worries unless you've bypassed the original installer

You can still upgrade to Windows 10 even if you used pirated software. However, you’ll receive an unofficial version instead of the genuine one.
