I have a copy of Windows 8.1 that isn't genuine, and I can easily get Windows 10 for free. If it turns out the system won't allow an upgrade and confirms it's not real, just reinstall Windows 7 (the official version) and proceed from there.

Unfortunately, it seems you'll probably have to wait 30 days before you can claim your prize after the PC upgrades.

Perhaps it won't matter since I have an official Windows 7 copy. Maybe using a KMS activator doesn't affect the outcome.

It looks like many individuals enjoy seeing games in early testing phases.

Only for a year if I recall correctly. Yet despite its stability, it doesn’t match the Windows 8 RP and 8.1 betas. Worked well for regular driving and there were no issues.

I’d like Microsoft to let users install Windows 10 directly using a W7/8/8.1 activation key instead of requiring updates from that version.

It sounds like you're trying to clarify something a bit humorously. The games were definitely rough!

I understand, but if you're using the latest tech preview and have Windows 7/8/8.1 installed, it would be great if you could simply move directly to Windows 10 when it becomes available.

They won't be making any updates, fixes, or new versions for the developer preview; treat it like an entirely separate operating system.
